As part of patient choice, Bexley residents have the right to choose the hospital or service they would like to access.
Bexley does not have a large-scale hospital (also known as an ‘acute’ hospital) but it does have two active hospital sites, one in the north of the borough and one in the south. Queen Mary’s hospital in the south of the borough has a 24-hour urgent care centre, cancer centre, kidney treatment centre, ophthalmology centre, musculoskeletal services, diagnostic services (MRIs, x-rays, imaging and sonography), phlebotomy services, adult outpatients, antenatal and postnatal care, older people’s services, children’s services and more. Erith hospital in the north of the borough has a 8am to 10pm seven-day a week urgent care service, ophthalmology service, musculoskeletal service, phlebotomy service, diagnostic services (x-rays and imaging) and children’s services.
The local commissioner, NHS Bexley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) plans, buys (‘commissions’) and monitors the majority of health services for all Bexley residents. Healthcare is delivered by different NHS organisations known as providers who run hospitals across south-east London and Kent. The CCG’s main providers include the following NHS organisations and the hospitals Bexley residents access:
- Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust – Lewisham University Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital
- King’s College NHS Foundation Trust – King’s College Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital
- Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust – Darent Valley Hospital
- Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust – St Thomas’ Hospital and Guy’s Hospital
In the main, where Bexley residents cannot be treated in the community, they will go to one of the hospital sites listed above depending on their injury, illness, condition or planned procedure.
The table below shows by % which providers are used the most by Bexley patients (in terms of CCG acute spend):
