- Bexley has the highest proportion of adults who are either overweight or obese (64.6%) of all the London boroughs. This prevalence of excess weight is significantly higher than the London average (55.2%) and also higher than any of its CIPFA nearest neighbour comparators.[1]
- The prevalence in Bexley (26.7%) of Reception Year children (aged 4-5 years) with excess weight is significantly higher than in London (22.3%) and England (22.6%) and higher than any of its CIPFA comparators. It is the second highest rate in London.
- The prevalence of excess weight in Year 6 children (aged 10-11years) in Bexley (39.4%) is also significantly higher than in England (34.2%).
- Within the London boroughs, Bexley has the 3rd highest proportion of people aged 65+ (16.5%).
- Whilst the percentage of the Bexley population from ethnic minorities (18.6%) is higher than in England (11.5%), it is the 4th lowest in the London boroughs.
- Bexley is the 7th least deprived borough in London, based on Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) 2015 score.
- Bexley has been found to have the highest affordability of home ownership in the whole of London and the borough has the 4th lowest proportion of overcrowded households (4.8%) within the London boroughs.
- The proportion of 15 year olds in Bexley eating five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day (46.9%) was the lowest of all the London boroughs and significantly lower than both London (56.2%) and England (52.4%).
- The percentage of Bexley residents making regular visits to the natural environment for health and exercise purposes (13.9%) is significantly lower than London (18.0%) and England (17.9%). Bexley is ranked 28th in London in terms of utilisation of outdoor space for exercise and health reasons and 14th out of 16, when compared to its CIPFA comparators.
- Less than one in twenty Bexley residents (4.6%) have access to woodland, which is considerably lower than the England average (16.8%). Within the London boroughs, Bexley is ranked 26th in terms of access to woodland and 15th out of 16 compared to its CIPFA nearest neighbours.
- The percentage of physically active adults in Bexley (61.5%) is significantly lower than the England average (66.0%). Whilst Bexley is ranked 21st in the London boroughs, the percentage of physical active adults is not significantly different from London overall (64.6%).
Just over half of adults in Bexley (50.6%) reported walking regularly (for at least 10 minutes at least five times per week). This is the same as the England average

- Only 10.6% of adults in Bexley reported doing any cycling at least once in the last month. This is significantly lower than both England (14.7%) and London (14.7%). Bexley was ranked 23rd in the London boroughs on this measure of active transport.
- Based on Census data, a relatively low proportion of households in Bexley have no car or van (23.7%) compared to London (41.6%). Within the London local authorities, Bexley is ranked 6th lowest on this measure and the borough also has a lower percentage of households without a car or van than England overall (25.8%).
- Of all the London CCGs, Bexley has the highest prevalence of hypertension (13.8%). The prevalence of hypertension for Bexley is significantly higher than London (11.1%), but the same as for England overall (13.8%).
- Bexley CCG also has the highest prevalence of stroke (1.5%) of all the London CCGs. This prevalence is however lower than the England average (1.7%).
- Whilst Bexley CCG has a lower smoking prevalence (14.4%) than London (16.4%), it still has the 2nd highest cancer prevalence (2.6%) of all the London CCGs. Whilst this cancer prevalence is the same as the England average (2.6%), it is higher than the figure for London (1.8%).
- Compared to the other London CCGs, Bexley has the 3rd highest prevalence of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) at 2.7%. This CHD prevalence is higher than the London average (2.0%), but lower than England overall (3.2%).
- Bexley has a higher prevalence of diabetes (7.0%) than both London (6.5%) and England (6.7%). Compared with the other London CCGs, it is ranked 10th highest out of 32, in terms of diabetes prevalence for adults aged 17+.
